Child Carrier Gear Review:

Child Carrier and backpack Review

During the last couple of months a few families have diligently been testing out three quality child carriers.  All child carriers tested were of good quality and represent a variety of styles and models.  Overall each carrier was good but they had such specific differences that they are all good for very different purposes.  All carriers were tested for what we think most people who visit this website do:  long day hikes and backpacking.

When purchasing a child carrier you should ask yourself the following questions:

What will I mostly use it for?

What is the size of the child being carried?

What is the dimension of the adult carrying it?

What weather will I be encountering?

What terrain will I be exploring?

                                                  What is your budget?

At the end of this review I have also included links to two different soft carriers.  Although I recommend frame packs for any kind of extended hiking, some families feel comfortable using soft carriers.  The advantage of soft carriers is that they are very light, compact and storable. The disadvantage is that they do not offer any significant storage space; they do not protect your child if you fall.

As I mentioned earlier, each company offers a variety of models and accessories.  I find it very frustrating that most accessories are not a part of the pack purchase.  A rain cover and sun protection should be a staple part of a backpack, as well as foot stirrups. They are almost always necessary for any hike over an hour and thus should be sold with the pack.

Kelty Kids: Frame child carrier FC 2.0

Most testers believed this was the most versatile, go to pack.

It was also the most affordable pack.

Cons: does not pack down, shade does not really cover child, detachable backpack is small and is not comfortable for an adult.

Includes: Zip off diaper bag with shoulder straps, 3M reflective tape, auto deploy kickstand, removable and washable cockpit pad, toy loops, carry/lift handles, five point adjustable child’s harness, under seat storage.

Little Life: Freedom Child Carrier

This carrier is more suitable for a day out in milder terrain or weather, like at a festival.

The lightest of the packs so this would be your choice for backpacking light.

Pros: light weight, simple, cute child friendly embellishments ( farm animals)

Cons:  seat gave a rash to one child who sat in it long because of chafing; limited storage area, sun/shower canopy gets caught in foliage, hard to reach buckles to strap child in, not very comfortable

Includes:  a sun/shower canopy, toy loops, airflow back system, pivoting hip belt, anchor point, mirror in pocket to check on child, under seat storage, reflective tape, large front pocket,

Anatomically shaped child seat and soft face protection pad.

Most packing space including a hydration system pocket.
